DPWH: Candon 'World-Class' Sports Complex to be completed by 2022 | via PIA
CANDON CITY, June 12 (PIA) - - Amid the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Ilocos Sur Second District Engineering Office resumed the construction of the sports complex and convention center located along By-Pass road at Barangay Bagani Campo here.
The Cuneta Astrodome-inspired sports complex sits on a three hectare land area with the building footprint of almost one hectare and the rest are allotted for parking and road network.
The special feature of the Sports Complex is that it will have a layered dome-style roofing system, which is one of a kind in the Philippines.
This is according to District Engineer Jose Ginete, Jr, and he added that the materials for the roofing system will be sourced out from other countries.
“This structure will have four floors including the basement and will have a seating capacity of at least five thousand spectators. The main area for this project is the multi-purpose court with an area of 960 square meters (24m by 40m) and a stage with an area of 600 square meters located at the first floor of the sports complex,” said Ginete.
The basement level will serve as the parking area, stock room, mechanical and electrical room, maintenance room, and will also have a fire escape stairs and a room for toilets for both genders.
The first floor will have a lobby and lounge area, patio/veranda, reception, administration office, Multipurpose court and Stage, and the Orchestra area on both sides.
It will also have a dugout at the center, and nine rentable spaces, and two dressing rooms located at the backstage of the Orchestra area.
The second floor will provide a space for another lobby, seating area, two restaurant areas, two common dining areas, four snack stands, control room (for light and sound), toilets for both genders, and a roof deck.
And the third floor will also have a lobby, two snack stands, seating area, and roof decks.
Since the start of its construction in 2017, three phases are ongoing and two phases were already completed.
Candon City, aside from being the center of commerce and trade in southern Ilocos Sur, Mayor Ericson Singson said the city also has its Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibitions (MICE) hub, so the said Sports Complex and Convention Center will be serve as its main site.
“This is a much awaited project for the benefit of our fellow Candonians and all over the province considering the magnitude and potential impact of the project,” said Mayor Singson.
He also stressed that the said sports and convention center will serve as one of the main magnates of the development and economic activity in the city’s by-pass road which is seen as the city’s next business and trade center.
“It will also have a major impact in helping us recover from the COVD-19 pandemic,” he added.
DPWH Ilocos Sur Second DEO assures that with the threat of COVID-19, workers are mandated to follow the construction safety guidelines for the implementation of Infrastructure projects.
All of the 120 workers and three Engineers who are in charge of the project are staying in a bunk house and they are not allowed to go to work if they are not wearing face masks and daily monitoring of their pre and post work health conditions are undertaken.
Adequate food, safe/potable drinking water, disinfectants, and hand soaps are also provided to its in – house personnel.
The Sports complex and convention center aims to motivate the younger generation to excel in sports and music and also invite investment in the city to increase its revenue.
The 5,000 capacity seat coliseum is also expected to host major sports events like out of town Philippine Basketball Association games, professional and amateur volleyball games, concerts, government and private companies’ events.
